MSA’s footballing journey has been one of both ups and downs, highs and lows; the team has experienced devastating defeats but has also tasted many triumphs. Starting off as just a Friday night fitness session, we partnered with Frenford’s Youth Club to create a competitive team, playing in a 5-aside league week in and week out.
Initially, when we only had 6 set players, and had hardly had one training session together, we entered into the intermediate league of Super5league during the middle of the season, due to there being an opening. It was rough, being a beginner team in an intermediate league; goals on goals were going in - but not for us. I remember when our first goal went in, we were ecstatic. It showed that our perseverance and determination weren’t in vain. It’s safe to say we didn’t win that league, but what we had learnt was indispensable.
The season after, with now 10 set players, we entered with a burning passion. At the beginning of the season, we won our first trophy, the League Cup. Following that, with it being a very tight race, up until the final game of the season, we accomplished 2nd place in the beginner’s league. Due to the increase in team members, we were also able to enter the FA People’s Cup, which we weren’t able to do the previous year. However, probably our proudest moment of the season, and our biggest achievement, was winning the Nike Women’s tournament hosted at Stamford Bridge -Chelsea’s playing field. It really showed us that hard work and dedication pays off. Thanks to that event, our team was also featured in Time Out Magazine.
We now have 20 set players and are ever-growing. Our short-term ambitions are to win the beginners league next season and be promoted. Our long-term desires are to win as many trophies as possible, improve our individual skills but also develop our team chemistry further - after all football is a team sport.
