Frenford & MSA 1 - 4 Sirens FC

It was more points dropped for our intermediate team against Sirens FC in the penultimate game of the season. The ladies were outplayed by a better side and struggled to cope with the quick passing and movement of the opposition.

The first half was relatively balanced, with both teams struggling to string passes together and get shots on goal. The Sirens picked up the pace in the second half though, whilst we struggled to create chances up front. Four goals were conceded and it could've been more, were it not for a few excellent saves from Monique.

It was overall a disappointing and disheartening performance, but we meet the Sirens again next week for the final game of the season, and will hopefully manage to come away with a better result!

Frenford & MSA 4 - 4 ELL

Goalscorer(s): Tayyiba (3), Zaina

Frenford & MSA dropped two points against East London Ladies after a typically poor start to the game. The ladies were 3-0 down within the first ten minutes, with ELL taking advantage of the huge gaps in defence and putting away their chances. There was no sign of giving up however, with the team used to coming back from behind from losing positions. The first goal came after Tayyiba put away a great through ball into the back of the net. This was quickly followed by a penalty awarded to Frenford & MSA when the goalkeeper handled the ball outside the box. Zaina put away a perfect penalty to make it 3-2.

The dominance continued after half time with Tayyiba scoring a brace in quick succession, the first a penalty after she was fouled in the box by the keeper. This put us 4-3 up, however ELL managed to score an equaliser after a handball in our box saw a late penalty awarded to the East London Ladies.

It was two points dropped for the team, but an enjoyable game with three penalties, a lot of goals and a lot of drama.

Frenford & MSA 3 - 6 Victoria Park Vixens

Goalscorer(s): Tayyiba, Sabah (2)

Frenford & MSA were defeated by league leaders Vixens in a tight match with the two teams at the top of the table. The ladies went into half time 3-2 up but seemed to lose all energy in the second half, struggling to defend tightly and get forward to create chances.

The first half had also started slowly, with Frenford & MSA 2-0 down early on and struggling with the intensity of the opposition. With 10 minutes to go however, two goals by Sabah and a goal from Tayyiba put the ladies 3-2 in front, completely against the run of play. The Vixens recovered their form after half time and were relentless, scoring four goals and it perhaps could've been more had Monique not made some excellent saves.

It was a great game to learn from, and well done to the team who played very well despite the last-minute changes to the squad.

Frenford & MSA 3 - 1 Brockwell United

Goalscorer(s): Tayyiba (2), Pooja

It's fair to say Frenford & MSA were slightly nervous about their encounter with Brockwell United, with the team line-up missing four regular players and tough opposition awaiting. The ladies were also slightly distracted prior to kick-off, appearing to be more excited by Coach Yasmin's bag of Ramadan snacks than the thought of a pre match warm up.

The distraction thankfully didn't continue on to the pitch. The ladies got off to a controlling start, passing the ball around with confidence in the opposition half. A goal was fired in by Tayyiba who toe poked it in the top right corner to make it 1-0. Pooja made it 2-0 when a superb cross from Zaina was bundled in through the goalkeeper's arms at close range. Great individual performances helped the team massively, with Mariam working well with the team to drive the ball forward and Rose solid at the back. Lucinda also made a huge impact with crucial saves at important moments of the game to keep Brockwell at a distance. They did manage to grab a goal shortly before full time however, and perhaps could have had a few more goals in the back of the net were it not for a superb goalkeeping performance.

Overall a great performance and result for Frenford & MSA. Shoutout to Mariam and Lucinda who made their intermediate league debuts and were instrumental to the win.

Frenford & MSA 2 - 5 Las Bravas

Goalscorer(s): Sabah, Shifa

Frenford & MSA were defeated by Las Bravas on a cold Wednesday evening. It was a crushing defeat, with the team 5-0 down with five minutes to go before full time. Shifa and Sabah grabbed two consolation goals towards the end but it was too little too late by the Frenford & MSA side, who struggled with the physicality and intensity of the opposition.

The team got off to a quick start and had a shot by Tayyiba parried away by the Las Bravas goalkeeper within the first two minutes. An audacious half volley whilst lying on the ground from Sabah whizzed inches over the bar, with the boldness of the attempt earning plenty of cheers from the referee, team and substitutes on the sideline. Las Bravas responded with a goal bundled through our goalkeeper before their forward put another one away to make it 2-0. The opposition’s efficiency in front of goal continued after the break with another three goals coming in quick succession, expelling all hopes of a comeback. Shifa grabbed a goal back after superb individual play and Sabah added a second when her cross led to confusion between the Las Bravas keeper and defender. The referee saw the ball cross the line - although VAR probably would have disagreed - making it a full time scoreline of 5-2.

It was a disappointing defeat for the ladies but lots to learn and we’ll be back next week to play Brockwell FC.

Frenford & MSA 5 - 3 Camden Eagles

Goalscorer(s): Tayyiba (3), Sabah, Shifa

Frenford & MSA fought back from being a goal down in the last five minutes to earn a thrilling 5-3 win.

Camden Eagles took the lead early in the game and went into half time 3-2 up after sloppy play from Frenford & MSA gifted them all three goals. It wasn’t a poor first half performance from the ladies by any means, but Camden Eagles were ruthless in front of goal and did well to capitalise on our mistakes. The half time team talk from Coach Yasmin encouraged the ladies to communicate better and avoid conceding the ball in dangerous areas.

Frenford & MSA responded well after the break, with Rose muting the Camden Eagles threat and Zaina and Sabah playing excellent football on the wing. Tayyiba had a couple of chances saved by an excellent Camden Eagles goalkeeper, before scoring at close range with a few minutes to go. A couple more goals were added by Shifa and Tayyiba just before full time to end the game 5-3, with Sabah assisting both goals from the right wing.

It was a beautiful evening and great to have the ladies back in action again after months without football!

Frenford & MSA 11 - 1 East London Ladies

Goalscorer(s): Tayyiba (5), Sabah (3), Shifa (3)

Frenford & MSA enjoyed an emphatic victory over East London Ladies (ELL) on Wednesday evening, putting eleven goals past the keeper. Sabah fired the team in front with a goal that came straight from kick off, starting the game with incredible intensity and drive. The ladies scored a few more goals in quick succession, with Shifa and Sabah combining well on the wings in Coach Yasmin's favoured diamond formation. There were some moments of excellent combination play between the forwards which made for a thoroughly entertaining first half.

ELL were largely contained by Frenford & MSA, but did have their opportunities to score during a few periods of sloppy defending, particularly in the last 10 minutes of the game where Rose too often found herself completely exposed in defence. A few good stops from Aamina prevented any more goals being conceded and the game finished 11-1.

Despite the excellent result, the ladies will definitely be spending some time working on defensive recovery before a tough fixture next week against Sirens FC.

Frenford & MSA 1 - 2 Victoria Park Vixens

Goalscorer: Sara

Frenford & MSA's intermediate team were defeated for the first time this season on the team's return to football following the second national lockdown. There was a great atmosphere throughout the game, with the players, coaches and fans all elated to be back at Mabley Green.

As may have been expected after the long break, the game got off to a slow start, with both sides lacking fluency and confidence on the ball. The opposition gradually eased into the game and scored the first goal after outstanding individual play from the Victoria Park Vixens forward. Shortly after the second half, they doubled their lead with another goal and perhaps could have made it a few more, were it not for a couple of last-ditch clearances from our defence.

There was still hope for the ladies however, when an unstoppable shot from Sara made it 2-1 with 10 minutes to go, giving the team a much-needed confidence boost. We turned up the heat in the closing few minutes and put the Vixens under huge pressure. Zaina came close to scoring from Sara's corner with a toe-poke, but the goalkeeper did well to hold on to the ball and seal a huge 3 points for the Vixens.

Frenford & MSA 9 - 0 Fuego B

Goalscorer(s): Tayyiba (5), Zaina (2), Sara, Shifa

It was a bittersweet evening for the Frenford & MSA ladies as they put nine goals past Fuego B on the final night of football before the four week lockdown.

Both teams were in high spirits and hungry for a win to end the year on a high. Despite this, we started off slowly, struggling to string any passes on the ball and static off the ball. Tayyiba and Zaina managed to get two goals in the first half but the ladies were summoned for a sombre team talk by coach Yasmin at half time, who was unimpressed by the lacklustre performance.

We returned to the pitch for a far more impressive second half with super-sub Yasmin replacing Sara, who had an excellent first half in defence. The half time team talk had an instant impact. Zaina and Shifa were both immense down the wings, dribbling past the Fuego defence and creating great chances for the forwards. The ladies dominated and put seven goals past the keeper, with goals coming from Tayyiba, Zaina, Sara and Shifa. It was a deserved win despite the slow start to the game, and we end this period of football with four wins out of four in the intermediate league.

Our Monday and Wednesday evenings of football will be sorely missed for the next four weeks, and we hope to be back at Mabley Green very soon!

Frenford & MSA 6 - 1 Brockwell United

Goalscorer(s): Sabah (3), Tayyiba, Zaina, Brockwell (own goal)

Frenford & MSA met familiar rivals Brockwell United on a bitterly cold Wednesday evening. Having lost to them twice in the Beginners' League last season, the ladies were determined to win and put an end to their poor head-to-head record against the side.

The game got off to an excellent start, with Frenford dominating play down the wings and Brockwell struggling to string more than a couple passes together. Sabah opened the scoring with a great individual goal, skipping past the defence and slotting the ball away past the keeper. The dominant display continued throughout the first half with a couple more goals from Tayyiba and Sabah, and the ladies could definitely have added a few more had the finishing been more accurate. The second half continued in similar fashion with Frenford & MSA in control of the game. Another three goals were added to the tally and it was great to see Zaina getting on the scoresheet with her first goal of the season. Brockwell managed to get a consolation goal to deny us a clean sheet, ending the game 6-1.

It was yet another solid performance by the newly promoted ladies, and we look forward to seeing more of the same next Wednesday against Fuego B!

Frenford & MSA 1 - 0 Las Bravas

Goalscorer: Tayyiba

Frenford & MSA came through a tough challenge against league leaders Las Bravas with a hard-fought win and an important clean sheet. The first and only goal of the game came five minutes in, when a cross from Sara bypassed the Las Bravas defence and Tayyiba was able to beat the goalkeeper with a well-placed shot. The ladies had a few more chances early in the first half, threatening the defence, but were unable to convert.

It was clear to see how Las Bravas had come away with a 9-0 win last week, their players displaying beautiful combination play and coming close to scoring throughout the second half. We defended the goal stoutly, with Shifa and Rose making crucial tackles and the two forwards also playing a deeper and more defensive role. The opposition looked to salvage a draw in the dying moments of the game but the Frenford & MSA backline held out strongly to seal a win.

All in all, it was a big test and a big result for the ladies. We meet familiar rivals Brockwell FC next week and hope to maintain the 100% win record.

Frenford & MSA Women FC 7 - 1 Camden Eagles

Goalscorers: Tayyiba (4), Sabah, Shifa, Rose

Frenford & MSA returned to Mabley Green following promotion to the intermediate league with an emphatic win.

We took control of the game from the start with excellent combination play between the two forwards, supported by Shifa and Zaina in defence. The first goal came when Sabah put pressure on the Camden Eagles goalkeeper, who did her best to boot the ball out but only managed to clear it as far as Tayyiba. A well placed shot in the top right corner made it 1-0. A second goal followed in similar fashion, with the goalkeeper this time losing the ball after coming under pressure from Zaina.

The ladies entered the second half 3-0 up, looking to keep a clean sheet and get a couple more names on the scoresheet. Rose was solid in defence, muting the threat from the Camden forwards, whilst Shifa‘s stream of attacks down the left wing were rewarded with a goal and an assist. Sabah topped off her excellent performance with a cool finish, easing pass the defence and slotting the ball past the keeper. Rose also scored an impressive goal with an audacious shot from our own half which slipped through the keeper’s hands.

It was a perfect start to the new league for Frenford & MSA. Well done to Sabah and Rose, who both scored and had excellent performances on their debuts. A huge shoutout out also to our keeper Aamina, who had a great game all round.
